Coaching for Change, Traveling Through Transition
Jan 29, 2026By George Encinias
In a world obsessed with instant success and five-step formulas, few are willing to wrestle with what transition really feels like. The truth is—transformation is messy. And growth? It rarely comes without grief.
“Change is inevitable, but growth is optional.” — John Maxwell
The need for change is constant, whether we choose to recognize it or not. Ironically, it’s not the change itself that proves most difficult—it’s “the process of change”, also known as transition. This includes the emotional, relational, financial, and psychological shifts that change demands—and that’s where most people get stuck.
According to the American Psychological Association, over 60% of adults say they feel overwhelmed by life transitions—like divorce, job loss, burnout, spiritual shifts, or stepping into something new. Yet, most suffer in silence, afraid that needing help means they’ve failed.
My Story: When Transition Became Personal
In the summer of 2010, on a Wednesday night at the church my wife and I had pastored for 15 years, we stood before our congregation with broken hearts, a need for change, and fear of what the future would look like. Through tears and raw emotion, we announced our resignation.
That night changed our lives—and began the journey of what I now understand as transition.
I didn’t know it at the time, but God was walking us through a sacred process—one that would ultimately reshape my calling and prepare me to coach others through their own transitions.
“Change only happens when our level of desire (or actually desperation) rises above the level of our fears.”— Dr. Sam Chand
I lived that truth. Now, I help others navigate it too.
Reflection Questions:
- What part of your current situation is calling you to grow, even if it feels uncomfortable?
- If fear wasn’t a factor, what bold decision would you make today?
The A.D.A.P.T. Framework for Navigating Change
Here’s a simple, faith-based roadmap I use with my coaching clients:
A – Acknowledge the Shift
Recognize the change you're experiencing—emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or circumstantially.
Change starts with awareness and honesty.
D – Discover the Opportunity
Every transition holds hidden potential. What is this season revealing about your identity, purpose, or next step?
A – Align with Purpose
Clarify your values and calling. Align your mindset, habits, and decisions with who you're becoming, not who you used to be.
P – Plan with Intentionality
Create a realistic, step-by-step roadmap. Set boundaries, define goals, and identify the support systems that will sustain your growth.
T – Thrive Through Transformation
Embrace the new you. Use the discomfort of change as fuel for growth, breakthrough, and confidence.
Final Thoughts
Are you willing to let go of who you were… so you can become who you were always meant to be?
